From Lettering to Wayfinding
With C/O Berlin’s move to Amerika Haus, a wayfinding system was developed for the entire building. Its starting point was a defining architectural detail: the original ‘Amerika Haus’ lettering on the façade, designed by the building’s architects. No complete typeface existed. There were only the letters drawn specifically for the wordmark. Their forms provided the basis for developing the missing characters and completing the alphabet. What had previously been a single wordmark became the typographic foundation for wayfinding throughout the building. Echoing the façade, the letters were mounted as three-dimensional elements throughout the interior. Typography remained part of the architecture while taking on a new role: no longer simply naming the building, it now guided visitors through its spaces. The wayfinding system extended the existing design language, bringing the façade and interiors together in a coherent visual identity.
