Sam Youkilis – Under the sun
PROJECT Book DESIGN Concept / Book / Exhibition / Communication Media CLIENT C/O Berlin Foundation
info
With great attention to detail, light and rich colors, Sam Youkilis captures the longings and promises of travel as well as the beauty of the everyday. Almost ritualistically, the New York photographer and filmmaker documents his morning view out of the window before strolling through the streets as an alert observer, pointing his iPhone at the seemingly inconsequential situations that unfold before his eyes: the fresh espresso handed to him over the counter; the colorful displays at a vegetable stand; fishing boats drifting in the water or the casual tenderness of interpersonal gestures.
Sam Youkili's work sheds light on the contemporary, mass-media uses and effects of photographic images in our fast-moving visual culture: How are smartphones and social networks changing the way we deal with photography? How do we use images to shape our identities, share experiences and create meanings?
