Olympic and Paralympic Games in Berlin
PROJECT City Wayfinding / Strategic Consultancy DESIGN Design Concept / Wayfinding System / Bid Book CLIENT Kulturprojekte Berlin

Berlin's bid, together with its partner cities, to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044 is an ambitious project for the future. The selection process takes place in two stages. Under the guiding principle "Germany Wins with Berlin", the capital must first prevail against other German candidate cities before going on to compete on the international stage.

The Games are about far more than sport alone. Berlin itself becomes the Olympic stage. A comprehensive wayfinding system links the sporting venues and cultural destinations, creating a coherent urban experience and making the Games visible throughout the city.

The central concept of this wayfinding system is the consistent use of the Olympic Rings, from the largest urban interventions down to the smallest graphic details. Visitors arriving by air or rail are welcomed from the very beginning of their journey: the Olympic Rings mounted on Berlin's Television Tower signal the start of the Olympic experience even before they reach the city centre. This Olympic route connects sport, culture and the wider community. Competitions set against Berlin's iconic landmarks, together with the planned medal ceremonies at the Brandenburg Gate, symbolise what defines the city: openness, diversity and the unifying power of sport.

To support Berlin's bid, a 328-page Bid Book was produced, presenting every aspect of the proposal—from the sporting disciplines and competition venues to the city's wayfinding concept, urban integration, financing, sustainability and public participation. It forms both the strategic and visual foundation of Berlin's Olympic bid, communicating a vision of the Games as a shared project for the city's residents and visitors from around the world.
